Rise of AI & The Challenges of Human-Aware AI Systems

2 April 2019, 5.00pm - 6.30pm

Research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) suffers from a longstanding ambivalence to humans – swinging as it does, between their replacement and augmentation. Now, as AI technologies enter our everyday lives at an ever-increasing pace, there is a greater need for AI systems to work synergistically with humans. To do this effectively, AI systems must pay more attention to aspects of intelligence that helped humans work with each other – including emotional and social intelligence.

Join Professor Subbarao Kambhampati (Rao) as he provides a perspective on the status and recent progress in AI, and the heightened public expectations surrounding it, versus the current technical reality. He will also touch on ongoing research on designing AI systems that can interact and collaborate fluidly with humans, including modelling the mental states of humans in the loop; recognizing their desires and intentions, providing proactive support, and engendering trust.

About The Speaker

Professor Subbarao Kambhampati is a Professor of Computer Science at Arizona State University. He studies fundamental problems in planning and decision making, motivated in particular by the challenges of human-aware Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

Prof Kambhampati served as President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) from 2016 to 2018, and is presently a Fellow of AAAI and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is also a Trustee of International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), and was the Programme Chair for IJCAI 2016; International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling 2013, AAAI 2005 and Artificial Intelligence Planning Systems 2000. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Partnership on AI, a technology industry consortium focused on establishing best practices for AI systems and to educate the public about AI.

Prof Kambhampati was a National Science Foundation Young Investigator and received multiple teaching awards, including a university last lecture recognition. His research as well as assessments on the progress and societal impacts of AI have been featured in multiple national and international media outlets.

He received his Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering (Electronics) from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1983), and his Masters and PhD in Computer Science respectively in 1985 and 1989 both from the University of Maryland, College Park.
